Windows vs. Linux

I have debating in my head, which is better. Here are my thoughts

Windows
-Pros
More Programs
Easy for beginners
All around easy
Some support
-Cons
Less Stable
Requires more hard ware (on higher os')
Very Expensive
Takes large disk space


Linux
-Pros
Everything is free
Some what easy
Very Stable
Less hard ware required
Small
-Cons
Not a lot of programs
lacks support
not for a beginner

I just thought I would share, anything anyone would like to add? Chris?

Better at what? What distro are we comparing to Windows? I don’t completely agree with any of your points, but this is debated ad nauseam elsewhere.

I would personally use Ubuntu for both a workstation and a server, and so would Jesus.

'vs.' is the wrong phrase for this discussion. They each have their strong points with usability, cost, etc. and those are going to vary with each group of users.

Linux has just as great a selection of programs if not more available.
Support is widely available as well, but there is an admittedly larger learning curve for most *nix/linux distros (especially with BSD) that many Windows Users are unwilling to overcome.

I like mandrake, too, but the damn squirrels have wrecked it and I don't think it's going to come back up this spring or summer:( As far as the Linux distro, when I used mandrake for a while, I had so many issues with it. I'd almost have taken a Win95 box over it, just for stability... but that was like 5 years ago. I'm *sure* it's gotten better... mmmmhmmmm.

Linux has evolved massively in five years. I’m not saying you wouldn’t have any problems (you would), but distros nowadays are much kinder.

To sum it up very briefly from my point of view:

Linux = better and even easier to use as server
windows = better and easier to use as workstation

Now by better, I'm not really taking stability or price in mind.

I'm wanting to look at going Linux for my workstation OS though, but currently I'm still a windows guy when it comes to workstations, but I swear by Linux when it comes to servers. Sadly where I work its purely MS, and the stuff that is Linux is crappy because its badly maintained, so it makes Linux/Unix look bad. (like some 486 running a DNS server for the internet... need to upgrade badly)

I've see linux get better faster then windows over the years as a workstation though, so its really made great progress. If/when I do switch to Linux for my workstation I'll probably ask myself why I waited so long.
