how long is too long for leaving win98 running?

I have been leaving mine run for 24 / 6 now for a long time only been stoping it on th 7th day after it runs on that day for 12 hours. then i do scandisk and other mantince and then reboot and let it run for the next week.

i am using it for my own radio station it sends the signal to the stereo and i hear music all the time yes even if i am a sleep because i wake up if it stops for any reason. like say a bad song file.

how long have you left yours run?

I've never left Win98 on for more than 24 hours. I think 8 hours is a strech if its being used. Since its just playing and your not doing too much leaving it on indefinitely shouldn't be a problem.

Woah… I really don’t see how you could listen to music all the time.

You make me want to get a copy of Windows 98 just to see how long it would run. The computers at my school computer lab run it, and they run for a whole school day until they are turned off. Considering what students do to them, that really surprises me! I only saw the blue screen of death once!

49.7 days is the built in limit. Yes, it actually has a limit to how long it can run, stable or not.

Wow decent, at my school if I stood behind the monitors and looked at the wall in front, I could see a shade of blue on the wall from all the BSODs.

that would seem to be just easy stuff but only playing music is still messing up the fragmentation alittle. but that might be the djamp and msagents running that is doing that. as the hard drive with the music on is not fragmented much so i dont defrag it.

i like music and i dont work so i have it on all the time basicly right now i am still beta testing djamp i might go back to stopping it half the day but it would still run just not do anything.

a bsod? i have not seen that on my win98 in 4 years.

of course i did change the colors of it with a tweaking program so it is not blue

that was a test red your school was wanting to see if you could still see the color blue

You have not seen a BSOD in 98 for 4 years? I hightly doubt that, you're probably running 2000 or NT and you don't realize, check the start menu see what it says, or perhaps it was an upgrade and it's still saying that it's 98. When I had 98 I'd get at least 1 bsod in a day, even if it's just sitting there doing nothing. Got tired of the blue so I customized it.

nope red no bsod in my win98 computer.

it does lock up and crash once every 4 months or 6 months but never shows a blue screen, and not even the color of screen i changed it to for the errors.

it mostly locks up when i try to do to many things than i have resources for.

but not any crash screen

i have not formated or reinstalled win 98 since 1999 either. i just got to get that new hard drive and transfer all the stuff to it sooner or later, most likely later.
when i get some money.

i have not got a bsod in the windows Me computer in 2 years. but it does also crash when i try to get it to do something it is not to do like run too long. winme dont like to run for 12 hours or longer so it crashes about that time, i think it has something to do with getting the cpu too hot. got lots of fans but it is in the desk and it is getting hot here now so it does seem to need the cpu cooler to run for long times.

holy crap not sure how you manage that. When we had a 98 machine I had to clean install it a few times a month since it got all crappy but then again it was a POS computer which did not help.

keep them cleaned and updated red. got lots of different cleaning programs in them and use all of them. some are on timers to run at scheduled times as in once every 2 or 3 months, such as defrag. i dont defrag all the hard drives all the time, just c drive and d drive which get used more.

e driver is just filled with song files. and does not fragment much at all.

the timers pop up and work when no body is useing the computers. so they pretty much keep them self's in working order.

got lots of ram in them so they have fast memory to do all the maintance.
just really dont have much on the win98 any more normal windows and a few other programs for office or art work, but mostly it is used for music playing and editing, i have an ati all in wonder in the win98 and that some times causes a tvdebug log to dump10 something? that is what the dos screen says some times when booting up.

also when booting up after it has been cooled down, the fans make a tearible noise but they smooth out when warmed up.

the win98 never has giving me much trouble since a ms tech told me to remove a lot of files for dos.? not sure what they were but some of the old programs for win95 dont work in it any more.

and the dos prompt does not work any more i have to reboot in to dos to get to it.

so in a way it is like win2000 but not really.

i also have a few winMe files on it that were working but they might have been replaced now as i put them in long long long long ago in a different century

it's just like the other forum where the loud mouth said i did not know what i was doing.

but i did not have much trouble with win98 like he did?
