If Bill C-22 passes we will be forced to collect and store user data for up to a year, and provide a backdoor for police to access this data any time they want.

I refuse to participate in such tyranny and will be forced to shutdown the forum. I will most likely have a redirect stating why.

Please sign this petition against the bill and contact your MP to urge them to stop this bill entirely.

Been pondering this more and I am looking at two potential options.

1: Incorporate in a country that has better data protection rights such as Panama. I have been toying with the idea of starting a hosting company for a while now, I just need to build out a platform for it. If I do this I would incorporate it in Panama and put the servers there or other countries that are friendly such as Iceland.

2: Malicious compliance. Keep things here, and just comply, but not make their lives easy. I would do my best to store as minimum data as possible but also make the interface to access it as clunky and terrible as legally possible.


To be honest, I am leaning towards 2 for the short term, and then eventually 1 when my ducks are in a row for the hosting company. The company would fund the cost of incorporating and this forum and UO Gateway would just move with it.

Looks like this is going to pass, they are rushing this bill through and shutting down any debate on it. It's going to the senate, which is mostly liberals, so it will most likely pass there too.

I will wait to see what the actual requirements are for site owners and decide from there what to do. I really don't like the idea of facilitating the surveillance state by being forced to give police admin access to the server, which is basically what this bill requires site owners to do but it's really not all that well defined. Maybe more details will come out once it passes.

LATEST UPDATE:

It past first reading of Senate. Chances are it will pass 2nd and 3rd reading and be law soon. They are forcing bills like this one very fast to get them done with little oversight or debate. This is how the Carney regime operates.

With that said I will not shut down anything. Companies such as EasyDNS will be using the clause that compliance is not required should it introduce a systemic vulnerability and I will be doing the same.

Making any changes to our services to store user data and/or allow police to view said data by definition would create a systemic vulnerability, we will not be changing any of our code to comply with this bill.
