Offgrid Homestead Build

Post by Red Squirrel »

A few years ago I bought some off grid land, and today the shovel has hit the ground. Clearing a road, and then an area to actually start building.

I had attempted to do it myself last year but it was quite futile without the right equipment. Pretty excited to have the ball rolling with this. Goal is to be far enough from the road where I can feel safe to leave stuff behind as I want to start to build and actually be able to go there to camp and such. Long term goal is to perhaps even live out there since there's just too many bills in the city, and it would be nice to retire early.

Some pics of the progress so far. The ground has lots of rocks so been kind of working with that, and going around anything that's too big. The told me this is good though as it will make nice solid ground for building on. Septic might be a bit of a challenge though... but I'm sure I'll be able to find a spot that will work when the time comes.

Day 2 clearing progress pictures. Fixing up entrance to make it wider and also using some of the material in the area to build up the road going in to the property. Also going to have a bigger culvert.

Cleared area which is where I will build. There's a nice rock formation at the end too.

Day 3:

More dirt being moved, and 3 dump truck loads of gravel arrived. They should finish up tomorrow. They will install a new culvert and finish packing down the road. I'm not covering the entire opening with dirt as I was not even planing on this to begin with so this is more like a bonus and don't want to blow my budget. The terrain is really rough to work in and not really drivable so the dirt will help at least create a place to park. I may decide to get another load of gravel at very end but they were nearly getting stuck with dump truck so it's a bit of a gamble to get them to come out that far.

Day 4: All done!

I didn't go today so these are pics they sent me. Total cost was $10,994.60 ($8650 for clearing + $2344.60 for gravel)

As I post this we're getting a huge storm so they finished just in time.

Next steps is to start building an outhouse and shed. Outhouse might be tricky as the ground is super rocky but hopefully I can find a suitable spot.

Grass is starting to grow in already which will help make the ground more stable. Also brought in a small shelter so I don't have to pack so much stuff when I go there. Can leave camping chairs and stuff behind now.
